Eat This, Not That: Foods To Avoid This Thanksgiving With Orthodontics

eat-this-not-that

It’s almost turkey time! You know what that means...a table full of Thanksgiving favorites like corn on the cob, casseroles, and pecan pie. Everything is all delicious and wonderful, unless you’re an orthodontics patient who is supposed to be extra cautious about what you eat. If you’ve got braces during the holiday season, you’ve probably already been advised by your orthodontist to avoid particular foods to keep your teeth in tip-top shape and avoid potential damage and discomfort. That’s why Austin Family Dentistry has put together this super-helpful, easy-to-understand infographic to help you choose the best foods during the most beloved meal of the year. Check it out below!

what-not-to-eat

If you’re an orthodontics patient, you should avoid:

  • Casseroles with nuts (or any foods with nuts, for that matter)
  • Meat directly off the bone
  • Large slices of turkey and ham
  • Corn on the cob
  • Raw carrots (and similar crunchy vegetables)
  • Nuts and apples
  • Cranberries, whether dried or sauced
  • Popcorn
  • Caramel anything (i.e. caramel apples)
  • Pecan pie
  • Apple crumble pie

But simply because you should avoid certain foods as an orthodontics patient doesn’t mean you can’t have a delicious dinner! You can easily enjoy:

  • Stuffing
  • Salad without nuts
  • Small bites of turkey and ham
  • Steamed vegetables of most varieties
  • Potatoes, mashed or sweet
  • Cornbread
  • Green beans
  • Pumpkin pie (with or without ice cream!)
  • Chocolate pie (and other custard-type pies)

Tips for eating with braces include:

  • Bite and chew using the side of your mouth
  • Develop a preference for softer foods
  • Stay away from anything that has nuts and seeds
  • Avoid stringy foods (spaghetti, roast beef, mozzarella cheese, etc.)
  • Chew slowly and cut foods into small pieces
  • Always keep dental wax or dental silicone with you for mouth sores and cuts

With good habits and conscious choices, you can enjoy not only Thanksgiving dinner but every other meal year-round while you complete your orthodontics treatment, hassle and problem-free!
