Candy bars and taffy and gummy candy...oh, my! Halloween is right around the corner, and few things are scarier for dentists than the long-term effects of sugar on our patients’ teeth. Where there’s treats, there should also be a few tricks when it comes to taking care of your oral hygiene during this super-sweet season, and Austin Family Dentistry has a few things we want you to know when it comes to the ghoulish damage that candy can cause to your smile. Watch and learn!
So, is all of that candy really that bad for your teeth? In the long term, yes. However, if you’re indulging in moderation and following up with a good brushing (or at least rinsing or swishing with water if your brush isn’t available), you shouldn’t experience any issues. A good rule of thumb is to avoid the very crunchy and sticky candies, and limit the number of times you eat it. Don’t nibble on it constantly! If you’re an orthodontics patient, it’s already especially difficult to keep your teeth clean. This, in itself, greatly increases the possibility of cavities, and candy further complicates your oral hygiene routine.
Candy isn’t the only culprit. Anything starchy or sugary, be it a soda, dessert, or something seemingly innocent like chips or crackers, can cause damage to your teeth. The worst options you’ll encounter over the Halloween holiday tend to be caramels, jawbreakers, and hard sticky candy, so definitely avoid those if possible.
Basically, anything you keep in your mouth for long periods of time allows sugars to stay in your mouth too long. Our advice? It’s best to pick your favorite candy bar, enjoy it quickly, then brush, rinse, or drink water afterwards. Most of all, we want you to have a safe and happy Halloween!
Not sure what to do with all that leftover Halloween candy? Stay tuned in the weeks to come to learn more about our Candy Cash-In program to benefit our troops.
