Cavity treatments are some of the most common dental procedures we perform at our Little Rock dentistry practice, and our patients are often surprised to learn how long a cavity has been around before showing any signs or symptoms.
Meet Dr. Simona Ivan from Austin Family Dentistry, who is here to discuss what cavities are, how they’re treated, and how to prevent them in the first place.
So, what are the symptoms of a cavity, exactly? Well, you could not have any symptoms at all. This is especially true when a cavity is in its early stages and is very small. How do we detect such a small cavity? This is why we take routine x-rays when you come in for a visit. By doing so, we’ll be able to detect any changes in the your teeth, including any new or potential cavities.
Another sign of a cavity is that your teeth may be sensitive to hot, cold, or sweets. Certain beverages, especially those such as coffee or iced soft drinks, may irritate cavities that are particularly well-established.
Also, be aware of any discoloration in your teeth, including black or brown spots. These spots have a tendency to cavitate, or cause a hole.
Why Should I Seek Treatment?
What do you do if you suspect that you have a cavity? You should seek treatment before symptoms worsen. Bacteria can spread to the tooth’s pulp, which can cause nerve damage. Generally, the longer you wait, the more expensive treatment becomes, as well. And what if you ignore cavities all together? Ultimately, you can lose your teeth.
How do you prevent cavities? Of course, make sure that you brush and floss twice a day. Make sure to schedule with your dentist for a routine dental exam and cleaning every six months, helping us treat cavities before they become large and symptomatic. Finally, avoid snacking between meals.
Remember, because there are no symptoms in the early stages of a cavity, make sure you don’t wait too long to schedule an appointment with your dentist.
